Are People Moving Further Towards Medical Tourism?

While medical tourism is still somewhat in its infancy, a number of statistics have shown that the industry is experiencing steady growth over the past few years. There are a number of top medical tourism destinations around the world, with Turkey being one of the most popular, that have the makings of a world-class healthcare destination due to a number of factors. Things such as government investment in healthcare infrastructure, potential for cost savings, tourism infrastructure, reputation for clinical excellence, best practices and state-of-the-art medical technology and internationally trained and experienced medical staff. Here at Longevita, we are proud to state that we tick all the boxes and are here to show just a few of the benefits that heading to Turkey to one of our facilities for a cosmetic procedure.

While there has been a steady growth in medical tourism, some countries like the UK have actually experienced a sharp decline in the number of cosmetic surgery procedures being conducted – with 2016 seeing a 40% drop alone. This shows how much of an impact medical tourism could be having on the country, with a lot of this shift being due to the much lower cost yet high quality treatment that patients can experience when they choose to have their procedures carried out in Turkey. Here, we’re taking a look at whether people are moving further towards medical tourism, the effects this could be having, and why the industry is experiencing such growth.

40% Fall In Cosmetic Surgery Procedures in the UK

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons released statistics that showed procedures in the UK fell by a whopping 40% in 2016 when compared to the boom in the industry in 2015. While the report showed that breast augmentation remained the most popular surgery out of all of them, the statistics show a significant decline – from just 30,750 procedures carried out in 2016, compared to 51,140 in 2015. The report also showed that both men and women are choosing cheaper, non-invasive procedures such as chemical peels as opposed to regular surgeries, displaying how cost is one of the biggest influencers when it comes to people choosing cosmetic procedures.

Why Are People Choosing Medical Tourism?

As mentioned above, one of the main influencers when it comes to people choosing where to have a medical procedure carried out is cost. The second biggest influencer is quality of the medical facilities that they are looking to have their procedure carried out in. Medical tourism in a number of countries, in particular Turkey, offers low cost procedures at some of the best facilities in the world. In Turkey’s case, the government have put a lot of funding and accreditation into the medical tourism industry there, meaning the facilities are high class and the prices of the procedures can remain relatively low. In many cases, the procedures are available at a fraction of the cost of having the same procedure carried out in a facility of similar standards when compared to the prices of the UK and USA. Here at Longevita, we also pride ourselves on having some of the world’s best plastic surgeons which is another factor that is beginning to influence people to choose medical tourism.
