There are many reasons why a person may lose a tooth, whether it’s through trauma, decay, disease or simply old age. However, losing a tooth can have both aesthetic and functionality implications, as well as causing self-confidence issues. Some of the most common treatments for missing teeth is a denture or fixed bridge, but now dental implants are becoming more and more popular.
Dental implants offer a long-term solution for missing teeth, and can help to slow down bone loss and preserve tooth tissue nearby that is still healthy. This artificial tooth substitute is a replacement for the root portion of a natural tooth, and is generally anchored into the jaw bone. The implant is then used to support a crown or bridge, or to secure a denture in order to make these look even more natural. Dental implants are placed in order to help the bone tissue fuse together with the jaw bone, in order to create stability for the replacement.
There are a few advantages in choosing dental implants over dentures and bridges, including an improvement in functionality, reduced bone loss as the implant can help to stimulate bone growth and production, improved dental hygiene, and even better aesthetics as they are indistinguishable from the natural teeth surrounding the implant.

What are Teeth Implants?
A tooth implant is an artificial tooth replacement. Made from titanium, an implant is well tolerated by bone and fuses with bone tissue. Aim of teeth implants surgery is to attain a close contact between the outer surface of the implant and the encompassing bone tissue so they are osseointegrated together. As a result strong support for the new teeth is achieved.
How are Teeth Implants Performed?
Before any teeth implants are placed, it is important for the dentist to assess the overall health of patient’s teeth and gums. If there are any signs of gum disease or decay, these problems must be treated first. Afterwards, x-rays and in some cases CT scan are required in order to examine bone quality and look for nearby anatomical structures to avoid before the dentist begins drilling. Dental implant treatment is typically performed under local anaesthesia. However, IV sedation is may sometimes be used if it is a long treatment or the patient is very anxious.
The gum in which the teeth implant is to be positioned is cut and raised and a small hole is drilled in the jawbone at the exact location of the implant to be placed. The titanium tooth implant is tightly fitted into this socket and the gum is stitched back over the implant. If the bone material is not sufficient enough to have the implant, a bone graft may be required. Alternatively, the dentist may use mini dental implants whose size are smaller if they are suitable.
After the teeth implant has been positioned, healing and integration process with the jawbone begins which may take up to six months. The bone tissue will develop and anchor itself into the microscopic surface of the implant.
While the healing process continues, patients are given temporary teeth or they may go on to wear dentures. It is vital that temporary teeth do not apply any pressure on the healing implant. When the healing period is completed, the gum is lifted and a post is attached to the implant with a temporary crown. Four to six weeks later, when the surrounding gum tissue has grown, the final permanent restoration can be fitted to the tooth implant.
Results of Teeth Implants
Patients may experience some discomfort related with any type of dental surgery that may include swelling of gums and face, bruising of skin and gums, pain at the implant site and minor bleeding. Discomfort disappears in couple of days. Patients are provided with absorbable stitches and are advised to follow a soft diet for a week. Recommendations on pain management are given on the day of surgery by the dentist as a part of postoperative instructions. Dental implants have been used for over 30 years to replace missing teeth and they can last a lifetime depending on how well patients look after them.

What are the benefits of dental implants?
Dental implants not only improve the functionality of your teeth but also their aesthetic appearance. They can prevent bone loss and they do not have negative influence on neighbouring teeth. Furthermore, they improve speech, restore natural smile and retain youthful appearance.
What is sinus lifting?
Sinus lifting is a procedure used when there is not enough bone on the upper jaw where the implants would be placed. Sinus lifting builds back the missing bone structure so that implants can be placed properly.
What is bone grafting?
Bone grafting or bone augmentation is performed when the volume of the bone tissue is not sufficient to accommodate dental implants. This may be due to gum disease, infection or teeth loss. Additional bone tissue is gained after bone grafting enabling the implants to hold firmly on the jaws.
