Exercise After Breast Surgery: Do’s and Don’ts

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries among women. A boob job can greatly enhance self-confidence and perceived body image. Many women feel more comfortable in their skins after achieving their desired silhouette. A curvier bustline can give one a more feminine feel about their appearance. However, many suffer from shoulder, back and neck pains, discomfort, skin rashes, and irritation because of heavy breasts. Breast uplift can help with sagging, uneven boobs. With a boob job in Turkey, men and women can achieve their coveted body shape. Soon after, though, the one thing that patients seek is normalcy, a return to their routines. This is why, the most commonly asked question after surgery is, “when can I start exercising?”

Breast Surgery in Turkey

As with any surgery, breast reduction, augmentation or uplift requires a certain recovery period. In this, you have to avoid any strenuous activity. Although many people don’t like to alter their workout regimen, especially if they have an active lifestyle, your body needs adequate time to heal after the surgery. An important thing to remember is that every patient is unique. A customized surgery plan is given to everyone, depending on their needs. This means, although this guide will provide with general instructions, you have to consult your surgeon about specific information that’ll be tailored to you.

You won’t be required complete bed rest for prolonged periods. You must exercise after the breast surgery as it’ll help you take small steps towards a full range of movement. Exercise can improve blood circulation, which can help in the recovery process. Moreover, it can relieve tension and stiffness in the surgical wound. Slowly you’ll be able to increase your movement. You have to give your body enough time to be able to heal properly. For that, you have to “listen” to it. If you feel pain, discomfort, or fatigue, stop exercising immediately. There are some exercises that you won’t be able to do until your stitches have been dissolved. Rather than dealing with any unnecessary post-op complications, you should err on the side of caution.

Before we jump into the do’s and don’ts of exercise, it’s better to take a look at the recovery process of boob job in Turkey. The more you’re familiar with it, the easier it’ll be for you to avoid any problems post-op.

Recovery Process After Breast Surgery in Turkey

As boob job is no lunchtime procedure like Botox, it will take time for you to fully recover. It is a rather long yet rewarding way. At most, it’ll take 12 months for complete recovery. You can avoid any undue delays by taking care of yourself and following post-operative instructions provided by your dedicated Patient Relations Specialist.

Out of these 12 months, you have to be the most careful during the first three. After the completion of the 3rd month, you’ll be able to resume your regular workout routine although with some restrictions. You’ll also be able to return to work after 2 to 4 weeks post-op. However, the duration can vary depending on the type of work. After one whole year will you be able to see the final results of your surgery.

As far as the post-op procedure goes, you’ll be spending your first night at the hospital. You’ll be discharged the next day so you can return to your hotel room and take some rest. Longevita’s travel coordinators will choose only those hotels for you that offer complete comfort. A few days after the surgery, you can expect to experience soreness, swelling, mild discomfort, and sensitivity. There’ll also be some bruising around the surgical wound. However, these are all completely normal.

Either on the 4th or 5th day, you’ll have a check-up appointment booked with your surgeon and Patient Relations Specialist. You must attend it. It will ensure whether your recovery is on-track or not. In this appointment, your dressing will also be changed by the surgeon.

After a month has passed, your stitches will dissolve, and the swelling will begin to subside. Be patient about the latter as it can last for about three months. Many people experience sudden pains and cramping during the recovery process. It is also normal. You can take a painkiller for it in severe cases. If anything is bothering you, you can always consult the Aftercare Specialist. Our whole team will be available for you during the recovery process.

Some Things to Consider After Breast Surgery in Turkey

Following the breast surgery, you might experience some typical discomforts, such as mild sore throat, thirst, constipation, gas, sleeplessness and restlessness. You may not have normal sensation in the nipples. Moreover, swelling and inflammation are common. Your physician will recommend that you sleep on your back with your chest elevated to minimize swelling.

If you do attempt high-intensity exercise soon after the surgery, you’ll risk slowing down the recovery process. It can cause constriction of the scar tissue, which can put pressure on the implants. It can also dislodge them and give an uneven appearance. Make sure that you wear a supportive bra for one month provided by your surgeon.

Once you’ve resumed your normal workout routine, you need to look out for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, heat, and pain. If you’re experiencing some other post-op complications, make sure that you immediately contact your surgeon.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Exercise after Breast Surgery

You have to be careful about performing even the simplest tasks that require exertion after the surgery. Any strain on your wound can open the stitches. You have to be careful about pushing or pulling things as it can overstretch your muscles. This will directly impact the placement of your implants. Now, coming to the exercises that you can perform after the surgery.

  • Walking

We recommend you to take it easy right after the surgery. You might feel passionate about getting your body in the perfect shape as soon as possible, but you have to take things slowly at the beginning. Although you might not feel pain after a few weeks, you can still injure yourself. Start by taking short and frequent walks. As your body feels that it’s regaining its strength, gradually, start increasing the length of the walks. However, do remember to listen to your body as you need proper rest for healing.

  • Running and Lifting

Any vigorous exercise should be avoided, such as squats, chest press, pull/push-ups, planks, curls, deadlifts, or running. For any other weightlifting exercise, consult your surgeon before performing them. One wrong step and you may require a revision surgery, which will have you back at square one. You’ll have to wait for at least 6 weeks after the surgery for lifting.

During the 3rd month, you can start going back to your gym and can start leg extensions, light jogs, squats, and walking lunges, etc.

  • Arm and Shoulder Exercises

Mild exercises can be quite helpful during the recovery process. However, you have to be gentle with your body, especially until your stitches have dissolved. Your body will have changed after the surgery so take it easy. You can do some of the following exercises to stretch your muscles:

  • Slowly move your arm over the head and out to the side.
  • Gently move your arm behind your neck.
  • Gently move your arm to the middle of your back.
  • Slowly do arm circles and W shapes.

  • Yoga

As far as yoga is concerned, you cannot do any poses that involve back bending or twisting around as it can put a strain on the stitches. Avoid any position that requires you to stretch or lets your breast “hang”. Try doing gentle yoga poses in the third-month post-op.

  • Returning to the Gym & Sports

After three months have passed, you’ll start feeling more comfortable with your body. You may return to the gym by this time and start your regular exercise routine. However, you still have to be careful about not directly working the chest at all. You can do high-intensity workout but stay away from exercises that require hanging. Whenever you start feeling uncomfortable, stop.

Sports injuries are way too common. It is quite possible to get hit on your chest by playing basketball or football, which is why you have to avoid these games for a few weeks. You should consult your surgeon about when you can start playing them again.

Conclusion

Soon after the surgery, you should focus on doing everything you can to help your body heal. For that, you need a lot of rest. You will gradually gain more energy in the following weeks. Generally, plan on taking it easy. Listen to your body. It will tell you whether you are doing good or pushing too hard.
