Plastic Surgeon Debunks 6 Common Myths About Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that uses suction to remove unwanted fat cells from specific areas of the body. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reports that liposuction is the 5th most popular plastic surgery among both men and women. Yet, despite its popularity, misconceptions persist about the procedure and its results. Longevita interviewed Prof. Dr. Fuat Yuksel to learn about and debunk the top 6 liposuction myths.

Myth #1: I can lose weight with liposuction

Since liposuction involves removing stubborn fat pockets from large areas of the body, it is assumed that it’s a weight loss procedure. That is not true. Most patients only lose about as much as 2-3 pounds of weight after liposuction.

The best candidates for liposuction are those who have already achieved their ideal weight before surgery and want to get rid of pesky fat pockets in localised areas. Liposuction won’t help you lose weight in general. For that, you might need to consider bariatric surgery.

Myth #2: I can get rid of cellulite with liposuction

Cellulite is not like any other pocket of fat. While its exact cause is not known, it occurs when the amount of subcutaneous fat beneath the skin increases and pushes up. Meanwhile, fibrous connective tissue that connects the skin to the underlying muscle pulls down, which causes dimples and bumps on the surface of the skin.

According to Dr. Fuat Yuksel, since ‘liposuction only removes soft, fatty tissue and does not affect the skin or other tissues, it will not work on cellulite.’ Liposuction will not do anything about the fibrous bands, so it can’t help you get rid of cellulite.

Myth #3: I’ll put on weight after liposuction

Liposuction results are long-lasting for most patients. The treated fat cells are removed permanently, though weight gain can cause remaining cells to enlarge. Individual results vary.

However, Dr. Yuksel warns that ‘the remaining fat cells can grow in size if the patient does not regulate calorie intake.’ He advises that it’s still important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen after the surgery takes place.

Myth #4: All liposuction requires general anaesthesia

Anaesthesia, whether local or general, is generally safe. However, the former is considered safer than the latter. General anaesthesia can make people feel more anxious and fearful before the surgery.

In the case of liposuction, you should know that it is possible to have surgery with both general and local anaesthesia. But, Dr. Yuksel says that your plastic surgeon will have to determine whether or not you require general anaesthesia, depending on the size and number of surgical areas.

Myth #5: Liposuction is dangerous

There are certain risks associated with every surgical procedure. As far as liposuction is concerned, it is safe and only carries a ‘low risk of major complications.’

“Liposuction techniques have become more advanced over the years. It can be as safe as any other surgical procedure when it is performed by an experienced, certified plastic surgeon.” says Prof. Dr. Fuat Yuksel.

Myth #6: Liposuction Causes Lumpy Skin

It is common for patients to end up with lumps and bumps underneath their skin after liposuction. Dr Fuat advises, this is a normal occurrence; sometimes, it lasts for more than a month before going away on its own.

Dr. Fuat Yuksel advises his patients to wear a compression garment after liposuction. At least for the first two weeks, this compression garment needs to be worn 24 hours a day. And during the next 2 weeks, wear it at least during the day unless prescribed otherwise by the surgeon.

Conclusion

Liposuction, just like any other surgery, is a huge undertaking. If there’s something about the procedure that’s worrying you, make sure to consult a board-certified and licensed plastic surgeon. This will prepare you for what to expect from the surgery.
