The world of beauty and health sounds incomplete without the mention of plastic surgery. Some 18 million Americans alone had surgical or minimally invasive cosmetic procedures in 2018, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Its popularity has been soaring among masses, both males and females. Gone are the days when celebrities getting surgeries was the news of the day because now it’s too commonplace.
From Cardi B, Iggy Azalea, Tyra Banks to Britney Spears, many big names have benefitted positively from their cosmetic procedures. Even many of the top Instagram models have had them. While it may seem that such a choice comes with wealth, it isn’t so. Although many celebrities and models get it done, doesn’t mean that common folks can’t. Plastic surgery is not a luxury option. Because aesthetic concerns aren’t the only things to be addressed, many people have different reasons for choosing it, such as a wish to improve their physical health.
The perception of what’s beautiful is obviously subjective and doesn’t have a defined criterion, and also, there are multiple procedures when it comes to plastic surgery. Still, it is so, according to us, that at certain times, certain procedures gain greater popularity than the others. Before we dive into the 2020 trends-prediction, let’s take a brief look at the procedures that were raved about in 2019.
Popular Plastic Surgery Trends We Saw in 2019
Here’s a list of the most popular procedures:
Of the five top cosmetic surgeries performed in 2018, ASPS reported breast augmentation on the top followed by liposuction, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery and tummy tuck. Almost every year, it remains the winner when it comes to statistics. Many factors contribute to the choice of women in getting breast implants. A healthy boost in self-esteem can result from it.
In 2019, a new method was introduced for this purpose called the “Hybrid” Boob Job, which essentially utilizes both implants and fat transfer. In it, smaller implants are used that help with sagging and capsular contracture risks. However, we think and predict for only implants to be preferred again in 2020.
Angular contoured cheekbones have been all the rage in 2019. It’s highly unlikely for you to have seen a celebrity not tending to them to make them obvious and highlighted. Needless to say, this trend has been very popular.
Differed techniques are used to achieve them. Makeup can create a bold look. While for some contouring has done wonders, many have looked towards getting surgeries. Bichectomy, the name of the procedure, works by removing fat from the cheeks, thus making the bone structure more apparent.
Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)
The people that come to mind as a reason for the popularity of the trend are the Kardashians. But they are definitely not the only major celebrities to have had the procedure. While BBL started trending a few years ago, the flame hasn’t died down even in 2019.
The procedure simply involved the transfer of fat through liposuction from parts of the body such as stomach or thighs to the buttocks to make them look bigger and rounder.
In a survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, it was found that 635,000 hair transplant procedures had been performed in 2016. The demand for the surgery continues to grow now that affordability has been factored in. It was found that hair transplant alone had a market value of $870.0 million in Turkey in 2017. The country has been a hub for medical tourism due to the low-cost procedures offered as a result of the favourable exchange rate and many other factors.
You might’ve heard of the big Hollywood names who’ve gotten hair transplant surgery. They are not the only ones, though. Hair loss can lead to significant loss of self-esteem and can occur due to any number of reasons from stress, genetics, ailments, to environmental stressors etc. Greater acceptance and lower cost aside, the procedure’s popularity has not seen a dip.
Rise of Selfie Culture and Cosmetic Procedures
Everyone’s familiar with it – the selfie culture. With the continued development of social media platforms that encourage it, there’s no end to it. In 2019 too, this seemed to be popular, with many joining the creation of Instagram worthy photos bandwagon. You’re all familiar with the highlighted, prominent cheekbones, big full lips, and Kendall Jenner eyes.
The internet was plastered with how you could achieve all. Instant celebrity hacks, makeovers and tutorials to the techniques for clicking the perfect selfie, you might’ve come across them. YouTube was flooded with videos that could better your art of selfie-taking. Still, however, many choose to get help from plastic procedures such as fillers to achieve the same results.
Plastic Surgery Trends We Expect in 2020
Now let’s jump into the future.
Injectables Aren’t Going Anywhere
The selfie trend, as stated before, is marked by plump lips, almond-shaped eyes and a contoured face. We expect the trend to maintain its popularity and so injectables i.e. Botox and dermal fillers will probably continue to be in demand in 2020.
For cheeks, lips, fine lines, hollowed areas, and nose, fillers can be used to achieve a younger, healthier look. Within a day, you can see the results of the procedures for yourself, and it won’t have a long tiresome recovery period. These days all it will take you is days to hide the signs of years of ageing.
Traditional Lipo Out Vaser Lipo In
We expect VASER liposuction to gain greater popularity and eventually even replace the traditional liposuction. There are many reasons as to why the important ones being lesser bruising, bleeding and scarring. It is minimally invasive and can be performed under local anaesthetics.
Through the use of high-frequency vibrations, fat cells beneath the surface of the skin are broken down. However, VASER liposuction is usually done when the patient needs to contour or shape their body.
In the past few months, “ab cracks” have gained traction. It is basically a vertical line that runs down to the middle of the stomach above the belly button. You might’ve come across well-shaped abs of many celebs on Instagram, most famously of Emily Ratajkowski. The trend is all over social media and seems to be the highlight of the coming year. Although the “ab crack” forms as a result of genetics, you can still make your ab muscles more apparent with the help of VASER liposuction. It allows targeting of smaller areas.
Celebrities are, to say the least, influential. A simple post by them is enough to create huge waves. They are, after all, the trend-setters. So it wouldn’t come as a surprise that this one too took flight from there. A person who is most known to have almond-shaped eyes is Kendall Jenner. They are achievable through reshaping the outer tail of the eye. The surgeries themselves are of two types:
- Epicanthoplasty is the horizontal enlargement of eyes achieved through the inner corner. It usually results in bigger, softer looking eyes.
- Lateral Canthoplasty is the enlargement of the outer edge of the eye for a big-eyes look.
Gender Norms Will Be Shattered
If you look up the names of celebrities who’ve gotten plastic surgery, a disproportionately large number of females would appear, however, the situation is reversed, if you look up hair transplant. The perpetuation of such gender stereotypes can make many men feel hesitant about getting a particular kind of surgery. And many then end up limiting themselves to hair transplant procedures.
Such an attitude can be unhealthy and is related to public pressures and the negative perception of gender roles. According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), women undergo more cosmetic procedures than men, accounting for 87.4%, or 20,330,465 procedures. Men accounted for 12.6% of all procedures in 2018 or 2,935,909 procedures.
We have witnessed a change in the tides, especially in recent times when it comes to issues related to gender. Thankfully, these days, people are becoming more open to the choices of others, and so we predict that in 2020 a greater number of men will undergo plastic procedures.
Extrapolating our forecast, we expect the top three areas of surgery among men to be: chin, jawline and abdomen (liposuction). Male breast reduction surgery was already in demand in 2019, but it will continue to be so in 2020 too by our estimates. The procedure can help many men struggling with larger breasts to gain a flatter chest through the removal of excess fat and tissue beneath the nipples. It is common for many males to experience an increment in the size of their breast tissue, but surgery can well take care of it.
