Veneers Falling Out on Stage? Expert Respond to Miss Thailand Pageant Clip

A Miss Thailand pageant clip has gone viral after contestant Kamolwan Chanago appeared to lose her “veneers” mid-stage in an unexpected moment. Footage of the incident, shared on TikTok by the Daily Mail, quickly spread across social media. However, according to cosmetic dentist Dr Izbel, an independent practitioner whose services are accessible through Longevita, the incident is unlikely to involve traditional veneers at all.

“It actually looks like the teeth are attached to something similar to a night guard, a removable appliance,” she explains. “This is not something we would recommend. It appears to be a moving block, and then a tooth comes off from that structure.”

The distinction is important. While the term “veneers” is often used broadly online, clinical veneers are fixed restorations bonded to the tooth surface and are not designed to come away during normal activity.

Why has this moment struck a nerve?

Cosmetic dentistry is more visible than ever, particularly through social media and televised events. With that visibility has come confusion about what different treatments actually involve.

Removable cosmetic devices are sometimes presented as veneers, despite functioning very differently. When something goes wrong in a public setting, it can blur the line between temporary solutions and clinical treatment.

How common is it for veneers to fall off?

It is uncommon, particularly without a clear cause.

Dr Izbel explains that dislodgement may occur in around 1% of cases shortly after treatment and up to 5% over time. Even then, there is usually an underlying issue.

“The fact that it happened while speaking rather than under force suggests that there was a problem related to the application.”

In other words, veneers do not typically come away during normal speech or performance.

Why do veneers fail?

When veneers do come loose, it is usually linked to one of three factors:

  • Errors during placement or bonding
  • Laboratory issues affecting how the veneer was made
  • Patient habits such as biting hard objects or using teeth as tools

“All of these can be considered among the common causes.” says Dr Izbel.

These are not everyday scenarios, which is why spontaneous detachment tends to raise concerns about how the treatment was carried out.

Are veneers strong enough for everyday life?

Yes, when properly applied.

“They are certainly durable enough for speaking and stage performance,” Dr Izbel explains. “As long as the patient avoids actions they would not normally do with natural teeth, veneers are almost as strong as natural teeth.”

This includes eating, speaking, and performing under pressure.

Is this kind of incident preventable?

In most cases, yes

“If a veneer comes off during speaking or a stage performance, this typically points to an underlying issue,” says Dr Izbel. In some cases, this may involve temporary veneers, which are not designed for long-term wear.

What to do if a veneer falls off?

Although it may feel urgent, it is rarely a dental emergency.

“There may be some sensitivity, but it can usually be re-bonded the same day or within a couple of days,” Dr Izbel says. “It does not turn into a long-term dental problem.”

Patients are advised to seek prompt professional care and to ensure their treatment is carried out by a qualified dental professional — both for placement and any aftercare required.
