Almost a decade ago, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s (ISAPS) survey, 560,854 rhinoplasties were performed. It made up 8.3% of the total surgical procedures. However, in 2018, 726,907 rhinoplasty surgeries were conducted around the globe. It is the 4th most popular surgical procedure among men. 188,696 males got this surgery in 2018 alone. US, Mexico, Germany, India, Italy, Argentina, Columbia, Australia, and Thailand are just a few places where this procedure is in demand. Needless to say, a nose job or nose surgery is a very popular procedure. However, in this guide, we’ll find out more about rhinoplasty swelling timeline.
For those who don’t know, rhinoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure. Therefore, the recovery period is not that long. If you feel uncomfortable or unsatisfied with the shape of your nose or the way it complements the other features of your face, then you can choose to get it. In this, your nose can be reshaped for sculpting it in a way your desire. The size itself can be increased or decreased. A hump in the bridge of the nose, crookedness, the size of nostrils, or a change in the shape of the tip are all concerns that this surgery can thoroughly address.
Moreover, those who have breathing difficulties can also take help from this procedure. Although the surgery wouldn’t take more than a few hours to complete, it won’t necessarily produce results that soon.
When Can I See the Results of My Rhinoplasty Surgery?
If there’s a delay in you seeing your final surgery results, then most likely, a detour from the provided aftercare instructions is the case. However, that shouldn’t act as a catalyst for you to derail from your recovery process. You just have to do a few things right, and you can speed up the healing.
It might take up to a year for you to see the final results of your surgery, so you need to be patient. It can surprise you to find out that the rhinoplasty swelling timeline is so long for such a small surgery. Regardless, it can take more than just a few months for the swelling to subside. However, you need to remember that this is normal. You might’ve waited for a long time to get this surgery. You just have to wait for a few months to be able to enjoy its results.
Other than experiencing swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose area, infection, scarring and formation of red spots are some other possible side effects.
Can I Get Back to Work With Rhinoplasty Surgery Swelling?
Usually, patients can get back to work after a few weeks of the surgery. This is despite the fact that there’ll be swelling around the nose. It is likely not to get in the way of your work. However, you have to be careful about not performing strenuous activities soon after the surgery. Avoid all such pursuits that can damage the results of your nose job. For instance, initially, you should not play sports as it can be dangerous if you get your nose hit. You can fall down, which can be just as harmful.
You should also be careful about staying out in the sun for too long. It can cause a sunburn, which you should absolutely avoid. Make sure to wear sunscreen whenever you leave the house. You need protection against the harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun.
Rhinoplasty is a few hour long procedure but the results of your nose job will be permanent.
What is the Rhinoplasty Swelling Timeline?
The swelling will start right after the surgery, and it is totally normal. You can return to your hotel room soon. Please, make sure to use cool compresses for 24 hours. Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort is normal among patients in the first few days. Another thing to remember is that soon after the surgery, the swelling may hide the results of the nose job. You might not be able to see anything behind the swollen wall of skin. But be patient, you will come to see the small changes after some time.
Your moustache dressing can be changed as needed (often 10 to 20 times). From day 2 to 3, you can expect maximum bruising and swelling. It may last for two weeks. It is nothing to be concerned about. Around week 2 to 4, much of the swelling will have gone away. Your breathing will also start to get better. It is the swelling around the nose that’ll take some time to go away. Try to limit the amount of sodium in your food as it can affect the swelling.
You’re likely to not even notice the swelling after a few months as it will persist for about a year at most. But that doesn’t mean you cannot perform certain activities for 365 days. You can get back to your normal routine after a few months. But before you do that, make sure to consult your surgeon. The reason why we cannot give a definitive rhinoplasty swelling timeline is that each patient is unique. There’s no one size fits all formula that we can use here. So, closely follow the post-op instructions given to you, and get in touch with us whenever you have a question.
Effective Tips to Shorten Rhinoplasty Swelling Timeline
Other than being patient, you can try a few things to reduce the swelling after rhinoplasty surgery in Turkey.
Elevate Your Head
If you sleep to the side after having a rhinoplasty, it can worsen your swelling. There’s also the danger of permanently ruining the results. Therefore, make sure to keep your head elevated for the first 48 hours to minimize swelling. You can do that by sleeping with an extra pillow or two. Also, try and prop some pillows around you so that you don’t take a turn unconsciously while sleeping.
Apply Iced Gauze Pads
Dip gauze pads in ice water and wring them out to form iced gauze pads. They should only be applied to the eyes and cheeks for the first 48 hours to minimize swelling and discolouration. Remember that you should not directly apply it to the nose as it can displace bone and cartilage. Also, do not use an ice pack of any kind.
Do Not Engage in Sports or Other Extreme Activities
To prevent bleeding and increased swelling, avoid extreme physical activity, including sports and intercourse. You may resume light walking three days after surgery. Aerobic exercise, weight training, heavy lifting, and straining may be gradually resumed three weeks after surgery. Don’t swim for one month since injuries are common during swimming. Even the most harmless activities like stretching can increase swelling. So, be very careful in the first few weeks of the surgery.
Do Not Smoke
If you don’t want to delay your wound healing after rhinoplasty, then stay away from smoking. The nicotine in it can cause swelling to occur and decrease blood flow to the surgical site. Therefore, avoid it at all costs. The nose is at the front and centre of your face. A swelling there can draw too much attention. Avoiding certain things can help you get past without being noticed.
Try Daily Massages
Massaging can be good to get the blood flowing and reducing swelling around the nose area. But you have to be very, very gentle. In fact, you should make sure to ask the surgeon how exactly you should do it and what kind of pressure would be safe and normal in this case. If you go about rubbing your face vigorously just to get the swelling down, you’ll likely break a stitch or unknowingly alter the shape of your nose. Many people habitually rub the tips of their nose throughout the day. However, you should not do that after having rhinoplasty surgery in Turkey.
Make Some Dietary Changes
You should not eat foods that are spicy. They can cause your blood vessels to dilate, which can increase swelling. Moreover, salty foods cause fluid retention, which can also worsen swelling. So, don’t eat anything too salty or spicy.
Try and stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. You are absolutely not allowed to drink alcohol for the first two weeks. Also, you have to cut down on your caffeine consumption. Consult your surgeon about exactly how much coffee or tea you can drink.
As time passes by, you won’t even notice the length of your rhinoplasty swelling timeline. We are constantly growing so naturally there are changes happening on our faces here and there. You’ll eventually see the results of your surgery, but you have to be patient.
